How can I participate?
We are currently organizing the 2023 edition of the "Ethiopian Girls Award" in connection with the International Day of the Girl Child in order to build partnerships and galvanized the global movements to end gender-based violence against girls and to reward outstanding efforts of individuals and institutions that contribute to the advancement of education and welfare for girls and women.
The event is expected to involve relevant Government Ministries ,UN Agencies, International agencies, the NGO community , celebrities and girls from high schools and universities . There will be an award session under five categories, an Inter-Generational Dialogue, special exhibition by NGOs and literature & art competition among girls.

The Ethiopian Girls Award
Objective
. To highlight the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders
. To provide opportunities to girls to express their views on the different kinds of gender-based violence.
. To secure and/or renew commitments from stakeholders.
. To take stock of and raise awareness about harmful practices that affects girls.
. To undertake advocacy on the rights of girls.

Award Categories
1. Outstanding Girl of the Year
This is to recognize and celebrate girls in the Ethiopian universities who have excelled in their respective fields of study or community service.
2. Role Model for Girls
This is to honor and acknowledge women who have excelled in their respective professions to inspire and encourage the future generation of women to achieve their true potential and thereby empowering their status in the society.
3. Girl- friendly Organization
This is to recognize and reward outstanding organizations focusing on the promotion of the rights and welfare of adolescent girls.
4. Girl-friendly Media
This is to recognize and reward outstanding media focusing on the promotion of the rights and welfare of adolescent girls.
5. Service to Girls
This is to reward the outstanding efforts of individuals that contribute to the advancement of education and gender equality and empowerment of girls.


The 1st Ethiopian Girls Award Ceremony

The 1st Ethiopian Girls Award was colorfully held for the first time with the theme " Empower Girls, Change the World." at the Mosaic Hotel in Addis Ababa on 20 March 2018. Officially opening the ceremony, H.E. Alemitu Umod , State Minister of Women and Children's Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, said girls in Ethiopia continue to endure gender-based violence, humiliation and other ills perpetrated in the name of age-old harmful traditional practices.
During the reception five outstanding individuals and institutions were awarded prizes under the five different categories in the presence of H.E. Alemitu Umod, the State Minister and other distinguished guests. They were selected by the girls' panels on the basis of recommendations made by five recognized experts in the area of girls' and women's education and rights of girls.
Recipients of the Award included Bethlehem Dessie, a first-year Software Engineering student at the Addis Ababa University, The Yellow Movement of Addis Ababa University, Yegna girls' radio show, Ethiopian Women Lawyer's Association and Bogalech Gebre of KMG Ethiopia. Yetnebersh Nigussie was also awarded as a role model for Ethiopian girls.
The event was attended by distinguished people from international agencies, embassies, celebrities, the media as well as girls from colleges and secondary schools. The event attracted huge media interest and all major TV, Radio and the Press attended. It was hosted by Wings Education and Media and its partners.
